Implementing mental health interventions for pregnant adolescents in primary care LMIC contexts
K43 TW010716-01A1 2018-2023
Objectives
1
Explore multi-level implementation barriers and facilitators to implementation of mhGAP-perinatal depression care guidelines in pregnant adolescents in Kenya
2
Use Aim 1 findings to inform the adaptation of Group Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT- G) and develop an implementation workflow plan that fits into existing MCH service structure and resources. The end product will be an adapted mhGAP implementation protocol and an IPT-G manual that will be finalized and used for capacity building
3
Examine feasibility of the adapted version of integrated mhGAP and IPT-G implementation model (developed from Aim 2) on (a) acceptability (b) engagement (c) preliminary effectiveness in adolescents and MCH contexts
01
IPT for prenatal depression
Fictional story of an adolescent who gets pregnant and gets abandoned by the boyfriend. It's about how her life changes when she joins group interpersonal psychotherapy sessions.
02
Conduct Disorder - mhGAP
This short film provides guidance on key features of conduct disorder and its treatment and management using mhGAP framework.
03
Dealing with Suicide - mhGAP
When a parent commits suicide, the child may feel anger, confusion, guilt, and rejection. How kids are supported while dealing with this has a big effect on how they recover.
04
Depression in Adolescents - mhGAP
Adolescent depression affects how your child thinks, feels, and behaves, and it can cause emotional, functional, and physical problems. It can have serious consequences and requires long-term treatment.
05
Young father talks out about Mental Health - mhGAP
This is about stigma associated with mental health problems among young people that prevents timely interventions and counselling.
06
Suicide Case Study 1 - mhGAP
Depression can be associated with high levels of stress, anxiety, and — in the most serious scenarios — suicide. It can also affect an adolescent's personal, work, social, and family life.
07
Smoking - mhGAP
Experimenting is part of growing up. Adolescents –especially in unsupervised groups – want to try something new such as smoking. What might seem harmless, has been consistently linked to substance abuse and severe addictions.
08
Bipolar Disorder - mhGAP
Youth people with bipolar disorder often have extreme mood swings. Such a person may have times of great elation and happiness, or irritability and severe depression, thus swinging between manic and depressive episodes.
09
Alcoholism - mhGAP
The younger a person is when they begin drinking, the more likely they are to develop a problem with alcohol.
10
Epilepsy - mhGAP
Many people develop epilepsy as children or teens. It is a nervous system condition that causes seizures. The stigma of epilepsy can discourage people from seeking treatment and has consequences for quality of life and social inclusion.
11
Psychosis - mhGAP
Psychosis involves a disruption to a person’s thoughts and perceptions that make it difficult for them to distinguish between what is real and what isn’t.
